AEO (answer engine optimization)
AEO is the work of making pages easy for AI answer engines to read, trust and cite, in products such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. It sits on top of SEO: a page has to be found and read before it can be quoted.

An answer engine reads a question, pulls from sources and writes a reply, often with citations. Getting into that reply depends on three things in order. A crawler has to be allowed to fetch the page. The content has to be readable in what comes back. And the page has to state something clearly enough, and be trusted enough, to be worth quoting.
The first two are technical and checkable. The third is mostly writing: lead with the answer, name specifics and say where a claim comes from. There is no setting that does this for you, and most of what gets sold as AEO is ordinary SEO hygiene under a new name.
Why it matters for a marketing site
Buyers now ask an assistant to shortlist vendors and explain a category before they visit a site. If the answer to their question sits behind a script, inside an image or under four paragraphs of setup, the assistant quotes someone else. The buyer may never see your page in that session.
How I handle it
I make sure the answer is in the HTML response and near the top of the page, that structured data matches what is visible, and that the crawlers you want are allowed in. The site performance check reports which AI crawlers robots.txt lets in, whether a page asks not to be quoted and how much text arrives before JavaScript runs. It will not tell you whether an assistant will cite you, because nothing can honestly tell you that.
Example
Say a pricing FAQ loads its answers from a script after the page renders. A crawler that does not run the script sees questions with no answers. Rendering those answers into the HTML costs nothing and fixes it for every reader, assistant or not.
Common mistakes
- Treating it as a separate channel. Google says its AI features use the same fundamentals as search, with no extra requirements or special markup.
- Blocking the crawlers by accident. A robots.txt rule copied from a template can shut out the assistants you were hoping would read you.
- Buying a citation score. Answers change by person, wording and day. A single number hides that.
Questions
Is AEO different from GEO?
They overlap heavily. GEO, generative engine optimization, comes from a 2023 research paper. AEO is the name more often used in marketing. Both describe getting cited in generated answers.
Do I need special files or markup for Google's AI features?
No. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Good search fundamentals are the requirement.
