Intercom with Astro

I connect Intercom to Astro with deliberate loading rules, useful visitor context and secure identification for logged-in users, so chat supports the page's main action rather than competing with it.

How I set up Intercom

I agree on where chat should appear, when it should load and what context the support team needs behind it. Then I test the experience for anonymous and for logged-in visitors, including the mobile layouts where the launcher has the least room.

For anonymous visitors that context is the page and the campaign, so the first reply starts with something useful. For logged-in users it is identity, verified from the server, because conversation history is attached to it.

How the handoff works

  1. 01

    Page

Where the widget is allowed to load

    Key handoff

  2. 02

    Visitor

    Context passed, not guessed

  3. 03

    Identity

Logged-in users verified with a hash

  4. 04

    Conversation

    Routed to whoever can answer

  5. 05

    Verify

Loading rules and identity both checked

Why this is the key handoff

A widget that loads everywhere is a decision nobody made. Where it loads, what it knows about the visitor, and whether a logged-in user is identified securely are three separate choices. The default answers all three for you, and one of those answers is a security question.

What gets connected

  • Messenger loading on the pages and moments where it helps

  • Visitor traits and page context sent into Intercom

  • Server-verified identity for logged-in users

  • Targeting rules by page, audience or account status

  • Consent-aware loading where required

What to watch out for

  1. 01

Loading Messenger too early can slow the page

The messenger adds third-party code that arrives before anybody has asked for it, so I measure its impact on the page and choose when it loads from how visitors actually need to use chat.

  2. 02

The chat launcher can cover important controls

A cookie banner, a footer link or the last field of a form on a phone. I test its placement on mobile so it does not sit on top of something somebody needs to reach.

  3. 03

Unverified identity can expose user conversations

Where the integration identifies logged-in users, the server verifies who they are before that identity is passed to Intercom, which is what stops somebody claiming to be another user and reading their conversation. I include it whenever logged-in users are identified.
