Memberstack with Astro

I add accounts, memberships and gated content to an Astro site, with access controls matched to the content being protected and a clear line between what is hidden and what is actually private.

Memberstack at a glance

What I do
Add accounts, gated content and paid memberships to an Astro site, with access controls matched to what the content actually needs protecting from.

How it is bought
Part of a migration scope, or a Continuous development request once the site is yours

How I set up Memberstack

Memberstack is fastest when the goal is a member area, resource library, course, paid community or account layer on top of an existing Astro site.

I build the flows to feel native to the site, connect plans to access rules and make sure subscription changes actually change access. The billing event matters more than the button click.

The security model needs plain language. If content is rendered into the page and hidden by JavaScript, it is not appropriate for sensitive documents. If the content must not be visible without authorization, it should live in Memberstack Hosted Content or another server-side system.

How the handoff works

  1. 01

    Signup

Taken on a page of the site

  2. 02

    Identity

    The member exists

  3. 03

    Access

    Gated content opens

  4. 04

    State

    The page reflects the plan

    Key handoff

  5. 05

    Verify

Access checked across login and plan states

Why this is the key handoff

Gating is proved logged out, not logged in. Gating that works when you are logged in proves half of it. I check the logged-out view too, because content that flashes before the gate applies was never actually gated.

What Memberstack connects to

Memberstack
  • Stripe

Take the payment behind a paid plan

  • Zapier

Hand a subscription or access change to whatever else needs it

Both hang off the webhook rather than off the redirect after signup, for the same reason the gate is proved logged out: the moment somebody gains or loses access is the moment everything downstream depends on.

What gets connected

  • Signup, login, profile and password reset flows

  • Gated pages, folders or elements by plan

  • Paid memberships through Stripe

  • Member data available for personalization

  • Webhooks for subscription and access changes

What to watch out for

  1. 01

Hidden elements are not server-protected content

Hiding an element client-side leaves the content in the HTML. For real access control the protected content has to not be sent, which changes where it lives.

  2. 02

Gated pages and search do not mix by default

If members-only content should never be indexed, that needs saying explicitly. If some of it should rank, the page needs a public version and that is a content decision.

  3. 03

Content Collections were not built to be a user table

Member data belongs in the membership system. Mirroring it into collections to render something creates two copies to keep in step, which is a sync to design rather than a field to add.
